obsessions

Lately I've been obsessing about:

  • peak oil: we don't need to wait for the oil to run out to have a whole shitload of problems. It's enough for production to peak. Coming soon, if it hasn't already happened.
  • local foods: one thing we can do now to address environmental and energy problems is grow and eat our own food, or at least buy from the people near us who are growing veggies and raising chickens, goats, pigs and cows.
    • Buy Fresh Buy Local: Pennsylvania small scale farming gets organized
    • PASA: The Pennsylvania Association for Sustainable Agriculture
    • The 100 Mile Diet: how far does your food travel from farm to plate?
  • climate change: as the world warms up, the complex climate mechanisms get thrown out of whack. Not good news since we kind of depend on things being stable. What can we do? Reduce greenhouse gas emissions and educate ourselves about the impacts of our lifestyles.
  • climbing: in the meantime, we can climb all the rocks we can get to, and ice too if we can find any.
  • linux: if you must use a computer, use a laptop running linux, preferably Slackware...
    • Slackware: use your computer, don't let it use you
    • Linux Questions: for when you get stuck
    • Dropline Gnome: the Gnome desktop environment for Slackware -- eye candy galore, plus lots of useful functional stuff
